Don't you feel safer now?

I'm all Wilderness First Aid certified again. :) Have been trying to be renewed for over a year now - if a class was offered when I could make it, the class didn't fill and was canceled, but if the class filled and could go, then I couldn't make it! Not this one! Actually made the special trip back to VB for the weekend to take the class. Yay! I'm all certified again! It's good for Scouting, and caving and hiking, and honestly, it's good for the type of jobs I do. When my job site is in the middle of nowhere, it's likely that help won't arrive for greater than 30 minutes, so I should be prepared.

Anyways, finally got all my pictures downloaded from my camera from the weekend. Some silly ones from the scenarios we ran too - good blackmail material ;) We would have done all our scenarios outside except it was POURING all morning, and steady rain through the afternoon. With some good thunder and lightning thrown in for good measure, we'd've probably ended up with REAL emergencies if we'd tried to carry on outside!

Here I am, suffering from hypothermia. (If you can't tell, I'm the one in the green burrito) I just love the look Jim is giving me. "So.... now what?"

This was my favorite scenario. "I have a STICK in my EYE!!" On my cue-card, I was supposed to be crying and hysterical, so I took the opportunity and hammed it up. The second little scarf I have in my hands was one Jim was trying to tie 'round my mouth to stuff the screech away :) My 'rescuers' kept asking how things were, did I hurt anywhere else, all that sort of thing. I kept screech-sobbing back at them "I have a STICK in my EYE - What more do you people want from me??" Was actually getting the other 'victim' to start cracking up - and she was supposed to have a sucking chest wound! Success!

Moving is such Fun!

If you can't hear the sarcasm in the title, please let me try again:
Moving is such FUN! :D :D :D

It's not the relocation that's the problem; I'm actually looking forward to that. I know Ft. Irwin is small and in the middle of nowhere, but at least it's close enough to big cities and parks and things so that you might not feel quite so isolated. I mean, yes, it's quite out there, but you can get to a lot of places for a good day trip. A lot of things to take advantage of within easy distance. I know I said that about Greenville, too, but the people are a bit different on a military base than in smaller-city South Carolina. And everything I've heard about the Ft. Irwin community is positive - you're all in the same boat, so the community is very supportive as a result. And there's always the added bonus of getting me out of Horrid Job here in Greenville! :)

It's the actual process of moving that's starting to get to me now. I'm in my last 2 weeks here in SC, and it feels like there are 8 million things to do, with time to do about 6. Not 6 million... 6. Yeah.... not a fun feeling. I am trying to get things sorted and cleaned up and cleaned out, get travel arrangements lined up, prepare for leaving this job and starting a new one... Quite a to-do list. And to make things even worse, my stupid response to to-do lists like this is a crushing, paralyzing sort of feeling. I struggle against it and get maybe 2 things done, but can't get over the feelining like I'm climbing Everest. Bah! At least I can recognize it for what it is, and not just get lost in the wallowing. :\

Doesn't help, either, that it's an Army move. It's so hard for Zach and I to get answers to questions when I can do so little to help. We still are in separate houses, with him finishing up training in Columbia, and me still here in Greenville. With Columbia being the military area and Greenville definitely not being one, it's very hard for me to help Zach get questions answered. He can actually stop by offices to pester people. Of course, that doesn't mean he gets helpful answers, either. They seem to have the biggest hang-up over moving from 2 locations. Don't seem to get that we just got married and haven't combined households yet - that doesn't mean it's not his stuff!!

Just have to take deep breaths and keep pluggin' away. Sort, sort, pack, pack... It'll all be over in a couple weeks - by March 22, we'll be out in CA!

I love my bunny!

So, we've developed a nightly ritual, Joey and I. I usually head to bed about 10, give or take. At least, that's about when I close down things in the main room and shut him up for the night and start all the nightly routines. As part of the nightly routine, I give him some veggies as a treat for going in his house so nice and quietly. Parsley or lettuce or carrots or something of the sort.

The kicker is, that he's been getting more demanding! It started as just waiting in his cage patiently. Then grew to 'periscoping' - standing on his back legs and peering out through the door in the roof of his cage waiting for me. If he hears me go the fridge, he's there peering out, eagerly waiting for me. The last couple nights, he's actually hopped in his cage at about 10:15 or so, and sits on his shelf looking at me expectently! It's a riot!

I spoil my baby, but he deserves it so!

This particular picture was taken at the National Railway Museum in York, England, during our big family trip there in 1997. He'd recently retired (Navy) so was in his shaggy-professor looking stage. He loved model trains, and was taking over our indoor porch with a model layout. When we were in England, there was simply no way we could be in York and not see the NRM :)

My dad died my senior year in high school, about 2 months before I graduated. As soon as I started thinking about "D's" that are important to me, I knew what I wanted to post on. It just took a little bit of gearing myself up to post this. I know it's been nearly 8 years since he died, but writing about things is still hard. He died VERY suddenly, and in the midst of a very tumultuous time in our lives anyway (HS, starting college). There's still feelings that I haven't fully dealt with, and a lot still that hurts to talk about. They say grief eases with time, and to some extent that's true, but there's still so much that hurts. Questions I want to ask, or things that I want to show him, or things I want him to be there for. All of it can be pushed away in daily life, but that doesn't mean it doesn't still ache when I think about it. I don't want this post to become sappy or maudlin; it's just a topic that's very bittersweet. I was close to Dad, and for that I appreciate the time I did have with him. I know a lot of people who aren't that close with their families. I just wish we all could have had more time together.

WIP Wednesday

And it's actually on Wednesday too!! Be proud of me :)

OTN this week:

• Square Cake - a little handbag using some of the white leftover cotton from my wedding shrug - yeah, I've got a little of it left over ;) The little bag is coming along nicely, though a little slowly, as I'm not all too speedy with DPNs. I'm almost half-way through the patterened part of the bag (the main part of the bag - not counting the handles) so I'm rather proud of that! I've got two pictures of this WIP below, since in one you see the stitching nicely, but it looks almost yellow, and in the other you see the nice white color, but lose the stitch pattern in the flash. Oh well, can't win 'em all :)

• The bell-sleeved shrug in the fancy yarn is coming along well too. I've almost finished the back! Granted the back is a nice big rectangle, but one needs some mindless knitting from time to time too
  
• The red Ripple Scarf is off the needles, but not quite a FO yet. I still have to weave in all the loose ends, but then it'll be done! Should have pictures of that for Friday :)

Life goes on, doesn't it?

Well, today was the first day of work without Amy. I'm so very happy for her, but I have to remind myself repeatedly that it's only for a few more weeks that I have to stick it out here alone. I was tired and grumpy at work and not feeling well, and I didn't have my e-mail buddy in the office to pass time with. :(

Meanwhile, the office is trying to adjust to having her gone. It's going to be interesting. Tom is another in our department, floats between the environmental work and the industrial hygiene (IH) work, but really wants to do IH. Keeps getting promised more IH work, but with Amy and I both leaving, though, neither Tom nor I feel he's going to be seeing much IH coming his way. Instead, he'll end up filling in environmental roles for an undetermined length of time. Very frustrating for him. He's another like me - recently out of school, trying to get some time on his resume at a 'real job', and just having to stick it out for a little more at the horrible company that let us get our foot in the door. Thankfully, he'll have a year at our company in March, about the time I leave, so hopefully that'll help get his foot in the door somewhere else, someplace where they might appreciate him a little more. It's sad that there's this mass exodus in the works in our department, but that's really just showing you how this company treats the environmental and IH staff (i.e. the 'non-engineers') We can stick around just long enough to get the experience that'll get us into jobs where they'll treat us better.

And if that wasn't enough of a Monday, some of the intra-office politics (particularly that in our department) was coming into play today too. Ridiculousness that, thankfully, I wasn't dragged into, but it's tiring when you hear it going on around you. Just a draining day.

And, if that wasn't enough of a Monday at work, I slammed my hand in a door at lunchtime. Feel like a moron about it. It was very windy today (beautiful day otherwise, though) and I was going into a store at lunchtime. A gust of wind blew by as I was going in the door and the door slammed shut, catching my hand in the door. Hurt like the dickens!!! I've got the start of a bruise across the knuckles of my right hand, and it hurt to type most of the afternoon. Feeling a bit better now, but still very sore to the touch and, like I mentioned, bruising. Good thing it was my right hand, though, and not my left, or I'd've really spent a miserable afternoon!

At any rate, I'm in the field tomorrow. Yay! I'm drilling at a site down an hour or so away from here, with lousy cell reception and enough work to keep me out of the office all day. I've got a good driller, and a straightforward site to drill. So, for at least one day this week, can escape the office and the computer with its never-ending stream of database reviews! (Yes, we're still wading through those...)

And you guys thought I forgot.

Well, I kinda did. At least I forgot something. My camera cable was at work yesterday, so even though I had my WIP pictures yesterday, I couldn't pull them off the camera and onto the computer. I know, ridiculous. But I had to forget something, didn't I? I couldn't actually have WIP Wednesday on Wednesday, right? :)

Anyway, here's the shrug I'm working on now. (Yeah, I forgot to turn on the flash - it's a bit of a dark picture)

It's just in garter stitch, but in a fun ladder yarn. Gives it something extra without having to do much work :)

This is what it'll be when it's done, though, obviously, not blue.

The little white purse is still in the works, though I've set it aside for a bit to finish the red scarf. I have someone to give that one too, now, so I need to get it done before moving cross country!

Doesn't hurt that I've got the ABC-along and knitting projects to discuss, and I like having someplace to chatter about work, knitting, life, etc. It really doesn't matter if people read it or not, I guess - I like doing this for me too :)

Anyway, to celebrate my 75th post here, I'm posting another recipe! This was given to our family by some friends at our church where we grew up. They're a chocolate chip cookie variation, but we call them pudding cookies or monster cookies. Pudding cookies, because you add pudding mix to the dough, in with the butter and sugar and all. Makes the cookies very moist and fluffy. We call them monster cookies because at the size the recipe calls for, they're HUGE! We usually cut down the size a little, but they're still far from bite-size. :)

I've provided instructions for both single and double batches. The double batch is really easy to make, though, and that's what we usually do. The cookies freeze very well, so it doesn't matter that you're making tons of cookies!

CHOCOLATE CHIP PUDDING COOKIES

For single batch:

• 1 small package French vanilla instant pudding mix
• 1 c butter
• 1 c packed brown sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 2 eggs
• 2 1/4 c. flour
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1 c pecan halves (optional)
• 1 (10-12 oz) package chocolate chunks

For double batch:

• 2 small packages French vanilla instant pudding mix
• 1 lb butter
• 2 c packed dark brown sugar
• 2 tsp vanilla
• 4 eggs
• 4 1/4 c flour
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 2 c pecan halves (optional)
• 2 (10-12 oz) packages chocolate chunks
• ** When making a double batch, you can use a 1-lb box of brown sugar and 1-lb box of butter (4 sticks). Makes measuring easy!

Cream together the butter and sugar.
Add vanilla.
Blend in pudding mix.
Add eggs and beat until light and fluffy.
Mix flour and baking powder. Add to creamed mixture.
Mix well.
Add chunks and nuts (if desired).
For generous-sized cookies, use 1/4-cup measure to scoop dough.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 12-15 minutes, or until brown.

A happy ending!!

Ok, so this post is a little back-dated, not in the date, but in the material. I didn't want to talk about this too much online, even though I haven't mentioned any last names or the company name or anything, I still didn't want to ruin something really good for someone else because I was so excited I had to post it here.

Anyways, great news last week - Amy got a good job offer!!! A really good one! A really, really, really, really good one! It's so exciting - she'll be able to work with more experienced people in our field (actually learn, instead of having to figure it out herself with the help of the regulations manual), she likes the people at the office where she interviewed, she doesn't have to deal with clients or projects like the ones we've got here, and it's a company she's wanted to work with since she got out of school. She'll even get to start pretty quickly, and on a big, interesting project they've got going. Pretty much, everything that she could be looking at as a criteria for a job change, this company is a step up - this job offer is PHENOMENAL!! I'm so happy for her! We went Thursday at lunch to fax over the acceptance form and were just giddy in the Kinko's office. Actually had to explain to the guy at the fax machine why we were so excited about a simple fax :)

We've been each other's sounding boards and support this past year, since she came down to SC, and I honestly wouldn't have made it through this past summer if I'd still be on my own. So I know how bad things got for her (and vice versa), and how great this offer really is for her. So exciting!! She's getting out of here! I'm out in March with the move, and Amy's out sooner than that (she starts at her new place on Monday). We just have to make sure things are lined up for Tom to get out too (and we're working on that), and then we're all free! Away from this horrible place! So what, if they're left with no environmental department? If they treated us better, we wouldn't all be looking to escape! We wouldn't be thinking of it AS escape, for starters!

Today she gave her notice in to our manager. She's been trying to give notice for almost a week now - first all the managers were out at a meeting on Friday, and then our direct manager has been reeeeeally sick and out of the office since Monday. Since Amy didn't want to resign over the phone or something (we likened it to breaking up via text message), she's just been waiting for our manager to stick her head in to check up on us, and today she did! Amy was really worried about it. Not that our wonderful manager would be upset, but that since our direct manager is a nice person and has her heart in the right place, that Amy'd be leaving her in the lurch. Good news though - our manager took it well! She's been in the same place as Amy's in now - hit the wall for what the current company has to offer, and just needing to move on. Was actually really excited for Amy. So much relief! Amy'll finish out the week and say goodbye to everyone on Friday. Happy endings abound!

Hehehe!! Just thinking about her getting out makes me happy again! She's free! Wheee!!!

Yeah, yeah

I know I haven't posted in the last couple days, but I've several good reasons for that.

First, I've been trying to be good, so be proud of me! As I've said, I'm trying to be more consistent with my running this year, and I've managed to drag my lazy butt out running the last two days after work. Did almost 4 1/2 miles on Monday, too! Granted, I was in a FOUL mood Monday after work, between work itself and a frustrating phone call from Zach about moving paperwork. Definitely had some energy to BURN, and flat-out NEEDED to run! After the runs the past 2 days, I've tried to be productive around the apartment - laundry, cleaning out paperwork, sorting through stuff pre-move, trying to find places to put away the wedding gifts that don't have a home yet - all sorts of good, productive stuff. :)

Second, we're dealing with a (stupid, stupid, stupid) computer-based project at work. Lots of database reviews for a big portfolio of sites. The database review is looking at state and federal databases for sites which might have environmental contamination - registered Brownfields sites, Superfund sites, underground storage tanks (USTs), etc. It's just one section (out of, like, eight) of the standard environmental assessment that we normally do. Don't know WHY they want these things done - it involves no site visit, so we don't even know if we're plotting these in the right point! All we have is Mapquest and Google Maps and the database search program to go by. If they can't tell me where the address is, I'm S.O.L. And there's just so much more on/around a site that can be an issue besides what turns up in the databases. And the databases are only as accurate as the information the state has to provide! I once had a site where the database was telling me that my property was a Leaking UST site, but the property was a restaurant (and had been for about 20 years!) Turns out someone in the state UST program had mis-entered an address - 1113 instead of 1133 or something like that. Things like that happen all the time! So why this company is ordering a WHOLE bunch (39!!) of database searches instead of getting a transaction screen or a full assessment, I have NO idea. There's no environmental liability protection involved with these reports (the whole point of getting an environmental site assessment in the first place), and there's really very little accuracy involved. All I know is that I'm stuck for the next week and a half writing these bad boys up. Which means I'm guaranteed to spend the entire 8 hrs I'm at the office staring at the computer screen - not even a chance of field time. :( Just totally mind-numbing!

All of that just means, by the time I get home from work, I'm being good and productive, and am so darn tired of staring at a computer screen that I haven't felt like posting :) Don't worry, though - today's Wed, and I'll remember to post a picture of my current WIP when I get home!

Lazy weekend

Yeah, not a bad one, though. Zach and I have spent a lot of time playing on the computers, I did some cleaning, folding some laundry (which is good, because it's almost time to do it again! That's about how my laundry cycle runs...). Good weekend overall. I have to say, I think the biggest accomplistment of the weekend was getting pictures of Joey on a sunny afternoon. Thanks to some good advice from bunny-lovin' folk over at Ravelry, I paid more attention to the natural light as I was taking pictues of him. Which meant I didn't have to use the flash. Which meant he didn't have demon-bunny redeye! Woohoo! The world can now see his big brown eyes for what they are!

I'd use this advice on Frank too (our Siamese cat at Mom's house) because we've been trying to get pictures of his pretty blue eyes for years! That's actually the source of his name, Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. Unfortunately, being a cat and all, if it's nice and bright out, our Frank has got his eyes tightly shut sleeping in a sunny spot! Silly kitten :)

Belated FO Friday

So, I didn't finish this 'til this afternoon, but it's still close enough that I can still call it a Friday FO, can't I? At anyrate, Dishcloth #3 is finished! Honestly couldn't tell what this one was at first. Could tell I'd followed the pattern correctly and that it was supposed to be something; I just couldn't tell what. It was like looking at a Magic Eye :) I looked on the Dishcloth KAL page, though, and everyone was referring to it as the Candybox, and then I saw it. It's a heartshape, with the bow tied in the middle, like a candbox! 'Course it didn't help that I was looking at it on the 'wrong' side (where the picture didn't 'pop' quite as strongly).

But it's done, and I've kept up nicely with the KAL so far this year. I am determined to finish all 24! I've plenty of cotton, and will be needing both dishclothes and washclothes (however I decide to use them), so it's not like I'm making something totally useless, right? :) I just want to follow through and keep up with it, y'know? It helps if I've got some way to check myself, and in this case, it's electronically! Between Ravelry and the blogs, I can see that I'm following through :)

'Nuff Said!

It actually wasn't a bad week, especially since all the managers were out today at a regional managerial planning meeting. Nice and quiet in the office today! Still, it's always good when Friday comes around! Have a good weekend all!

Reason I Hate My Job #1864

Equipment.

To understand why this is as bad as it is, let me provide a little background information. I work in an environmental & engineering consulting firm. Part of my duties within the environmental department include helping out with soil and/or groundwater sampling at sites with suspected contamination (old gas stations, dry cleaners, former mills, etc). A device used in all this is a photoionization detector (PID). We use a PID in the field to measure levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs - gas, diesel, dry cleaning fluids, etc) in the soil or groundwater. Gives us an idea what levels are like before sending the samples to the lab to be analyzed.

Why is this a gripe about my company? Because for the longest time, they wouldn't buy us a new one. They always acted surprised when we complained about it - apparently the old one worked just fine.

Riiiiiight.

The old one was a relic from the 70s, had a vague dial for a read-out display, and the cable connecting the meter to the sensor was held together by electrical tape. Although, it did have a convenient shoulder carry strap! Don't believe me? Check out the pictures below, as Amy models our lovely antique.

Now, here is our new one. It's a convenient hand-held model, digital read-out, and about a billion times more accurate than the old one. Can connect it to the computer and download all your data right away, all sorts of fun little tricks Mr. PID can do. This one here is our new one that Amy bought for us. Reached the point that we kept renting a unit, and it was coming out to be more expensive to keep renting it!

So that's the new toy. Yes, we do have a good PID now, but the run-around we had to get to have it approved was ridiculous. Now, if our engineering department had wanted it, you can bet it wouldn't have been nearly such a hassle for them. Just a bit of bitterness there. Only a touch.

What happened to the old PID? Amy wanted to send it to the Museum of Jurassic Technologies in CA (yes, there is such a place), but we ended up getting rid of it in the massive storage room clean-out last week.

WIP Wednesday

Thought I'd forgotten again, didn't you? Last Wednesday was too rough a day (heck, last week was bad, not just last Wednesday) and I forgot to post on knitting either on Monday or Friday. I know, I know. But hey - I remembered this week!

This is the latest dishcloth in the KAL. I'm only about 1/2-way through. And I can't tell what it is!! An anchor? An arrow? It's driving me nuts! But in a good way... It's like Christmas - the anticipation, what's it gonna be?? Fun! :)

Also OTN (only the active ones, of course):

• Square Cake - a little white purse, using some of the leftover white cotton from I Do - been working on this one since New Year's, and it's not a hard pattern, but I just go so slowly with DPNs...
• The red ripple scarf that I've been working on since Fall (the VT-W&M football game!) - almost done with it though!
• A shrug with the bright ladder yarn pictured below; no pictures of the work itself yet - I'll try and get some more done on the shrug by next Wednesday and post pictures of it then - basically, yet another light shrug to wear with LBD :) My evening dress-up clothes are mostly black and sleeveless, so I like having all the options for wraps and shrugs to bring in some color to the outfit!

And finally, I leave you with a picture of Piglet, because here today, we had a very blustery day as well. That big ol' storm front rolled through today, brought tons of rain (which we need) and cooled the place off, and brought some strong winds in as well. Explains why my knees were aching all day. Stupid arthritic knees! I've got Old Man Weather Knees, and I'm only 25!!! Anyway, as they say, It's Wiiiiiindsday today!

Nerd-powers, activate!

Yes, I'll admit it. I'm a comic dork. I like comics, cartoons, anime, was heartbroken when Batman was ruined in "Batman & Robin" and rejoiced in "Batman Begins." I. am. a. dork.

But I'm not going down alone! So is Anne!

Thankfully (or at least, such as we tell ourselves), we're the type of comic dork which can still blend with the general public, not like the Comic Guy in the Simpsons, or anything like that. And we still get a kick out of the attention we can gather going into a comic shop :) The dorkage lies deep, but is definitely there!

Truly they are wise.

So, I've discovered Photobucket is actually pretty good for finding icons and such for pages, blogs, etc. I don't like it so much for organization for my own pictures (still prefer snapfish or Flickr for that) but I like PB for finding things like Happy New Year pictures, or Valentine's Day, or bookworm pictures, etc. Good general-purpose stuff.

Anyway, in all that image-browsing, I found this bit of sage advice from the penguins. I'd seen the picture, but hadn't seen it captioned, and I like it. Sort of the Do-Something-Each-Day-That-Scares-You philosophy, which, honestly, I could use a bit more of in my life. And even better, it's penguins!!

Though, looking at it again, I've no idea why the little penguin in the back has a purse. A mystery for the ages....
