N is for...

Needles!

N is for needles

Particularly cute ones!

Well, really, this is just an observation on how particular people can be about their knitting needles. It's really pretty entertaining!

I am not a die-hard fan of any one type of needle. I guess if I had to rank them, I like plastic the least, then aluminum. When it comes to wood vs metal, well, it depends on straight vs circular :) For circulars, I'm a pretty strong Addi Turbo fan. For straights, I like wood, or a particular brand of metal. Unfortunately, the metal needles I like are from a British brand that I picked up on my study abroad and I've had a hard time finding them over here. Ain't that the way it always goes? Usually, though, I like wooded straights. Less "clattery-clicky" when I work with them. I have a few plastic ones, but those are the result of being stuck needing certain sizes and having to depend on Michael's or AC Moore instead of a LYS with more variety. Desperate times call for desperate measures!

For straight v. circular, well, I honestly prefer straights. I knit Scottish style most of the time, and that works really well with long straights. It's definitely a fast knitting style, too. However, with my intense dislike/dread of seaming and finishing, if I have the opportunity to knit in the round, I'll take it. Slows me down a little, but if I don't have to seam at the end, it more than makes up for it :)

Outside of general needles, I do have several needles that are favorites for partially sentimental reasons:

I have two sets of wooden needles that I picked up at a summer festival during my study abroad. I discovered them at a little antique dealer's stand there. They've got their sizes in the old UK system hand-written on the ends. They've been very well-loved, and are soooo smooth as a result - so nice to work with. The picture below is one of them (the other is in a project right now!)

I also have 3 sets of Serendipity Needles too. Serendipity is a company from RI that makes the absolute cutest needles. And beyond being cute, these are wonderful needles to work with, too! They've lovely sharp points, and nice and smooth wood. My 3 pairs are all sentimentally inspired - a brown rabbit with a carrot, a penguin, and a walrus. The little brown rabbit and the penguin are pretty obvious why, aren't they? The walrus is from a favorite Christmas special ("A Claymation Christmas"). One of the sections of the Christmas special has a pair of ice skating walrus, with a flock of penguins watching. Add little bow to the walrus on the needles, and they are identical to the ones ice skating!! I saw the walrus needles in a yarn store in Pacific Grove, CA and just about squealed out loud in the store. I would've gotten a second pair for Anne too, but the shop only had one set of walrus :(
